A schedule can look full and still be operationally wrong. ElShift is designed to evaluate the configured conditions around each assignment instead of treating every employee as interchangeable.

Constraint-aware scheduling means evaluating defined operational conditions before assigning work. ElShift uses staffing demand, leave, work patterns, weekly-hour limits, weekday and shift-template preferences, location suitability, existing assignments, and configured transition rules when evaluating Auto-Assign decisions.

Hard conditions can prevent an assignment

ElShift blocks Auto-Assign when applicable conditions make an employee ineligible. Examples include recorded leave, another assignment on the same day, disliked weekdays or shift templates, incompatible work-pattern dates, weekly caps, invalid locations, and configured transition rules.

Some settings rank choices; others affect eligibility

Liked weekdays and shift templates improve ranking among otherwise eligible employees, while disliked weekdays or templates block that assignment. Location settings are handled separately: disliked locations are ineligible, and a non-empty liked-location set restricts Auto-Assign to those liked locations.

Demand remains visible

Constraint-aware scheduling should not solve a shortage by quietly ignoring configured rules. If staffing demand cannot be filled with eligible employees, ElShift can leave that demand visible and explain the rejection reasons that contributed to the shortage.

Not necessarily. Constraint-aware scheduling describes the decision model: assignments are evaluated against defined operational conditions. ElShift uses a deterministic scheduling engine to apply those conditions.

What happens when configured conditions make a shift impossible to fill?

ElShift can leave the shift partially or fully uncovered and surface diagnostic reasons instead of forcing an ineligible assignment.
